When someone told me there was a good French restaurant in Brixton I didn't entirely believe them so decided I had to visit and see for myself. I'm glad I did as we had a lovely meal. All the dishes we had were interesting, beautifully presented and tasty. The service was excellent and the atmosphere stylish but understated. I definitely recommend a visit.

I'd read somewhere that Upstairs, Brixton has an air of the speakeasy about it. And that's certainly what I thought as we ascended the narrow stairs to the dining room on the second floor, having had to press a bell outside to be let in.
Staff were friendly & attentive, never hovering but quick to whisk empty glasses & plates away (maybe a little too quick). Every dish was carefully explained, beautifully presented & delicious. I would've liked more choice of wines by the glass. Fab evening
What a little gem in Brixton! From start to finish the whole experience was faultless, from the food to the setting and service. The waiters explained the menu without being patronising about it, we weren't rushed and were able to buy wine by the carafe even though not specified on the menu. As noted by other reviewers the portions are tiny, but after 3 courses, wine and coctails I was plesantly full. Go after dark to take advantage of the candle lit ambience. Great for special occasions.
Very pleasant experience indeed. Relaxed, friendly and efficient service, and one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Wish we'd checked it out years ago! £145 for 3 courses for 2, plus shared cheese, 2 cocktails, bottle of wine, and two glasses of red with the cheese.
Really nice place and service. The food is also good but nothing wow!
The cocktails (in particular the Helsinki Lifter) must be tried
Lovely food, attentive and friendly staff.
Nice little place off the beaten track.
Upstairs was exquisite food and even better service. I think one of the best restaurants in all of London!
Lovley food and great service
Exceptional find in Brixton - intimate, candlelit restaurant with excellent service. Food was wonderful, great flavours and textures.
We had an excellent meal at Upstairs in Brixton; nice personal service from all the staff, lovely ambience even with only about 10 tables (all of which were full), great starters (beetroot salmon gravlax & cured beef), amazing mains (halibut & miso duck) & an excellent cheese board. Great taste, service & portion size - would thoroughly recommend for a special occasion or date night.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owner of the restaurant - really friendly guy, who went out of his way to make us feel at home. We were escorted to our table (best table in the house!) and soaked up the relaxed and warm atmosphere. The menu, although (understandably) small was delicious and beautifully presented. The portions were just perfect.
Would definitely recommend to friends, great service, amazing food, outstanding night.
Gorgeous setting, unexpected for Brixton. So happy there is a French restaurant here! Food and service fab too! Will definitely go again
Excellent food with an intimate setting.
1st time. Very nice food, you could tell the ingredients were superb. The lamb was wonderful although the portion size as a main was on the tiny side. The ambience was really interesting, we were there early and it was a bit like visiting someones house, but then it got really busy and buzzy which for a Wednesday is impressive.
Entrance is very well hidden (no sign, just a door & a bell) Upstairs Restaurant is essentially a very beautifully converted townhouse. The restaurant spans 2 floors and feels special and intimate. Service is very attentive - food is presented on immaculate white plates but portions are a little mean and for me in terms of taste, I have eaten tastier food elsewhere. Not cheap either - bill was £175-ish for us between 3 people with wine...but may come here again for a romantic celebration
I cannot thank the person who told me to go to Upstairs, Brixton, enough. The food was perfectly prepared and just the right amount. The staff were friendly but not over bearing and the price was amazing considering the excellent quality of the food. The dining area is compact, but the experience still felt very private, perfect for a quiet dinner for two. We will be going back again and again now we have found this little gem. Maybe I'll see if there's room tonight.........
Been meaning to try Upstairs in Brixton for ages now - gutted I left it so long! Such a lovely place, the waiting staff are lovely and friendly and the informal setting helps you to really The food is far from informal though - three courses of exceptional food (with an amuse bouche and fab wine too!) that wouldn't be out of place in a central london restaurant. Hunt this place out, we'll deffo be back!
Food and service was excellent.
Great place, unpretentious atmoshere attenative service. Would reccommend to anyone
What a wonderful meal at Upstairs Restaurant in Brixton. This is the perfect place for a romantic meal for 2. The venue is small and the tables are quite close together, but with the candlelight and the fire burning in the hearth, it had a lovely atmosphere. There were only 3 choices of starters, mains and desserts, but the food was absolutely delicious. The service was also fantastic, the waiter was friendly, attentive, and he recommended a lovely wine for us so we could try something different
Surprised at how lovely the restaurant was, as from the outside it didn't look very inviting. Portions were small but to a very high standard. The restaurant had a fantastic feel and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
We had dinner at Upstairs in Brixton on Friday night. The entrance is discreetly tucked away just off Acre Lane. We were on the top floor, looking out over the rooftops to the lights of London, a beautiful setting and the food lived up to it. The menu is concise, but choosing was difficult, although a wonderful bellini helped. I had mackeral and squid followed by lamb with smoked butter mask and rounded the meal off with the cheese. Thoroughly recommended. We'll be back.
Great restaurant - portions a little small
Quite a surprise. Difficult to get to by public transport, but a great find. Run by people who obviously care about what they are doing.
Valentines Day meal was a treat. All the courses were excellent. Staff courteous polite and informal which sets a nice tone to enjoy the wonderful meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
Upstairs in Brixtonn excelled again last night. The staff are super friendly: it's like you are being welcomed into their home. And the food as always was very fine. Small menu (which is good), but always hard to choose - basically it's meat, fish or veggie - but all tantalizing.
There is superb food and excellent service at the Upstairs Restaurant in Brixton. It is a delightful place. The only minor issue is that due to the small size of the venue, noise and fellow diner's conversations tend to echo noticeably.
Lovely meal, service, atmosphere & owners
Outstanding meals from the Upstairs Restaurant in Brixton. All dishes were explained by the waiter, and service was swift.
Great food, great service, great ambience.
The Upstairs Restaurant, Brixton is excellent. Beautiful food and atmosphere. Lots of attention to detail in the cooking without it being fussy.
The Upstairs Restaurant is a great find in an ordinary area. Fab food off a very short menu. Fixed price menus not the cheapest but worth it for the unusual but super atmosphere and discreet venue. Great for (romantic!) couples and small groups.
Excellent food and good service. Odd location - but hand for us Brixtonites. The menu was a bit too small and thankfully the goat's cheese on the veggie menu wasn't too strong or I'd have not enjoyed my meal. Also, the cheesecake was more like a panna cotta. Overall, the starters and mains were superb. Dessert let it down.
Upstairs restaurant was a wonderful find in this frankly dodgy area (we could see the drug dealing from our window seat). Food and service were wonderful. Bill with a bottle of Prosecco and a bottle of Fleurie came to £55 a head with tip. There are now two floors of restaurant and only small bar area enough for 1 waiting table. Only negative was how dark the lasies loo was!
Upstairs, on Acre lane, is a very relaxed but sophisticated place. AS if you were dining at someone's appartment. Food was delicious and wine excellent. Would recommend to anyone who wants to try something different, but without the bad surprises !
I've been once before to upstairs, and again wasn't disappointed. Good food, very tasty and well cooked - worthy of a fine dining experience. We sat in a nicely decorated upstairs room of a victorian terraced house. My only problem was the place was quite loud, even though there were only a few of us there, and you did need to shout to make yourself heard, even though there were only 3 of us.
Nice cozy place in a hidden location. Good for dates or romantic evenings cause it feels very intimate. You have to press the buzzer to go upstairs.... Inside there is a bar in the first floor with an open fire and few tables. Very pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed my food. and the whole experience but felt that is slightly overpriced for what it ultimately offered. 2 course meal with a pre-dinner cocktail a glass of wine for 2 and 1 dessert 105 pounds!
A fantastic local restaurant - a real find. Excellent food that you would normally have to pay double the amount for in the West End. It's still not cheap but good value for money in my opinion. The atmosphere and decor are lovely too; all in all a great place.
Difficult place to find, tucked down a side street. It's essentially a terraced house that has been converted into a restaurant and is on two floors. Service was friendly and speedy considering it was very busy and a Saturday night. Tables packed closely together and it did get very noisy as the evening wore on. limited choice menu although what we had was really good. Probably a bit over priced but, overall, a very pleasant experience.
Upstairs was an absolute treat. Another gem hidden in Brixton that would satisfy even the harshest of critics. I implore people to try this restaurant as it was wonderful. I also liked the smaller touches, such as the free amuse bouche and the description of your meal etc. Great wine and for the quality of the meal I think the price is reasonable. Bon apetite
Upstairs Restaurant is a real hidden gem in southwest London. Inside a non-descript building with an unmarked door, there are two intimate dining rooms, atmospherically lit with strategically placed candles. The welcome is warm - as though you are arriving at a dinner party rather than at a restaurant. But the food is the standout. Faultlessly prepared modern French. The pig cheeks with cabbage and salsify on a Friday evening was outstanding: melt-in-the-mouth tender and full of robust flavours.
Upstairs restaurant was good- but not amazing. We had the 3 course menu- goats cheese mousse & venison terrine to start were ok, sardines (supposed to be mackrel) & lamb for main were good, & the desserts of quince cake & lime ice cream, and peanut blacmange were excellent. The service was good the majority of the time- apart from when we received the starters- my husband was in the loo, & came back to find his food had arrived. The waiter then interupted our conversation to tell us what it was.
Wow can't believe I haven't visited this hidden gem before. Divine food and great ambience. Service was excellent. The food hit the spot on every course. Though if you're a big eater, the portions are on the modest side. Suits me as I enjoyed every mouthful. The bread was freeflowing though which filled any gaps in the appetite. Am looking forward to going again.
Cute and attentive place with fanstaic pre-meal lounge. Menu selection limited but great attendtion to detail.
Great meal - lovely restaurant & staff.
Excellent food and service. Only potential downside for some customers might be the relatively limited menu. This said, the restaurant is small, cosy and full of character and not pitching a vast menu for the masses. Fine dining, excellent presentation, cosy romantic atmosphere and first class service are the stand out features of this small slice of gold on acre lane.
this was a wonderful evening with fantastic food! service was great, nice wine list but i just have to say again the food was superb. its a little hard to find though and a better sign would be helpful.
Ate here with a friend - 3rd visit. Harmony on a plate - beautifully sourced and cooked food. Decor lovely - cocktails amazing - big storm clouds at sunset over the rooftops of Brixton high from top floor of a Victorian house. Staff and owners very friendly and knowledgeable. Set menus so not good for fussy/big eaters....Delightful - eat early to avoid the noisy later crowd and then go down to the bar for a drink! Late opening. Not cheap but excellent price/quality ratio.
This was my second time visiting Upstairs in Brixton, and as before the food was wonderful. I had the crab soup and then sea bass - perfectly cooked. My boyfriend had the pork belly and loved the crackling!
However, for a small restaurant in not the most salubrious of areas it's pricey, and the management has changed. The French matire'd and waiter were very snooty (Parisian snooty!) and their indifference was offputting. Think twice if service is important to you.
